The Vegetation

With over 15,000 species of plants, including more than 2,500 kinds of tree, Westonbirt Arboretum is home to one the largest and most diverse arboretums on the planet. There are species that are native to its location, but also many more exotic species from regions thousands of miles away. This requires quite a bit of maintenance and upkeep, but the hard work is enjoyed by all who take a stroll through these magnificent specimens. In addition to providing sprawling beauty, the area is an important one for plant research and worldwide conservation efforts.

The History

Westonbirt Arboretum was founded by Robert Holford, a passionate horticulturist who wanted to restore natural beauty to the Westonbirt House. Fortunately, Holford was a wealthy landowner, and the Victorian era was one of great opulence and admiration for beauty, so many other naturalists were willing to work for him to hunt for exotic plants all over the world. As more people signed up for his expeditions, he planted more trees and plants throughout the arboretum. In contrast to many other arboretums, however, Holford planted his trees based on aesthetics rather than genus or geology. This allowed to put together a natural wonder that was both ecologically friendly and educational but also unimaginably picturesque.
